New Head Coach of Men’s Volleyroos announced

Volleyball Australia is pleased to announce that the new Head Coach of the Men’s National Team is Marcos Miranda.

Miranda is a four-time Olympic Coach of indoor and beach volleyball as well as a former professional player from 1972 to 1984, with the Brazilian National team.

Miranda is a four-time Olympic Coach of indoor and beach volleyball as well as a former professional player from 1972 to 1984, with the Brazilian National team. He has coached for Brazil at four separate Olympic Games; three with the indoor Men and Women's teams, and one coaching beach volleyball. His greatest Olympic success came in Barcelona in 1992, where he led the Brazilian Men’s indoor team to Gold Medal victory.

Marcos will join the Australian team in Poland for a preparation camp ahead of the 2021 Volleyball Nations League (VNL) in Rimini, Italy.

“I am very excited to begin the work that will start at the training camp in Poland before we go to Rimini for our first tournament together at the VNL,” Miranda said.

“We live in difficult times and we must adapt to the new rules of the world. It will be a very challenging competition with the best teams in the world, but we will go a thousand percent, doing our best, and enjoying every minute of training to have a great VNL campaign.”

Miranda will be joined by Australian Assistant Coaches Liam Sketcher and Paul Carroll. Liam has been coaching the Men's Volleyroos since the beginning of 2017. Paul Carroll is no stranger to the team; being a 15-year Volleyroo veteran and former Captain of the Men's Volleyroos.

The Australian Men’s Team is scheduled to enter the bubble on May 24, with competition to commence on May 28.

“Australia’s Men’s Volleyroos bring an exciting brand to the VNL”, said Steve Tutton, FIVB Head of Technical & Development Department.

“We are excited to support Australia in the further development of their National squad through support of the employment of new Head Coach Marcos Miranda under the FIVB’s Projects Platform”.

“The VNL is the pinnacle of world volleyball and I trust that all of Australia’s Volleyball fans will rally behind it’s team when the broadcast partnerships are announced and the VNL is underway”.

The 2021 VNL will follow the same format of 12 core teams and four challenger teams per gender with each team playing against every other.

The Australian Men’s team is one of the challenger teams for the 2021 VNL alongside Bulgaria, Canada and Slovenia.

Men’s Volleyroo veteran Nehemiah Mote will be the on-court Captain for the Australian Men’s Volleyroos, with Western Australian native Luke Perry to co-captain the squad at the 2021 Volleyball Nations League.

“I can’t wait to play another VNL. It’s going to be exciting welcoming a lot of fresh faces into the team including Head Coach Marcos who seems really passionate,” said Perry.

“This is the start of a new cycle and the Olympic qualifiers are just around the corner again. Time to put our head down and get back to work, it’s been far too long since we last played”.
