Matthew Kemp to join the Australian Volleyball Academy in 2021

The Australian Volleyball Academy (AVA) is thrilled to announce that QAS athlete Matthew Kemp will be joining the 2021 cohort in January at the Australian Institute of Sport.

The 17-year-old began playing volleyball in 2015 for his school team at St John’s Anglican College. Matthew has since gone onto play representative volleyball and participating in numerous junior development camps. In 2019, he travelled internationally to play in U21 National Championships in Thailand.

“I am keen for the opportunity to further develop my skills” said Matthew on his 2021 AVA signing. “I can’t wait to work with the best coaches and athletes in Australia to guide me on my volleyball pathway”.

Matthew first heard about the AVA through his involvement with the Australian Junior Development Program in 2018. Since then, the young athlete has had the opportunities to play in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore as well as having played against visiting teams from Japan and New Zealand.

“Matt struck me as a young man with a strong idea of where he wants to go in the future and was certain his first big step towards international volleyball was with the AVA”, said AVA Men’s head coach Brendan Garlick. “Pairing the raw athleticism Matt posses with his strong inner drive to achieve big goals has me quietly confident that Matt has a lot of potential to achieve some big things in our sport.”

Matthew’s biggest volleyball inspiration is Men’s Volleyroo Thomas Douglas-Powell. The young athlete had the chance to have a one-on-one training session Thomas and described it as a fantastic learning experience.

Matthew is not only a talented volleyballer but also has a black belt in Karate, having trained in it for eight years. With the karate on hold for now, Matthew is hoping to graduate from the AVA and go on to play college volleyball in Canada and then eventually play for the Australian Volleyroos.

The primary objective of the Australian Volleyball Academy (AVA) is to identify and develop Olympic potential athletes for Volleyball and Beach Volleyball. It is the High-Performance Development Program for volleyball and beach volleyball athletes who aspire to reach the elite level of their sport.
