The Australian Women’s indoor volleyball team has gone down to the Thai under 23 side in the opening match of their tour of Thailand.
The Volleyroos lost in five competitive sets in the first practice match in the lead up to the Thailand Sealect Invitational tournament with the Australian side looking to improve upon their fifth placed finish last year.
Captain Kelli Lean says it was a great learning experience for her side; “Despite the loss, the fight and effort from the girls was outstanding throughout the night. It was a different style of game from what we’ve played recently but with the demeanour of the way the girls took on the game I think this will bring about better results in the future.”
Head coach Marty Collins was pleased with the level of the game after a slightly nervous start; “ Most of the sets we played today we put ourselves in a position to win, however, we were unable to either make the crucial dig or win the long rallies when it counted. For our first game of the tour I was pleased with the ability of all players to contribute and that will be important in these conditions. The box score is quite interesting as our whole team basically scored between 5-9 points.”
The teams will play one more game before Australia heads to Sisaket for the Invitational Tournament.
