The Australian men’s Volleyroos will need to finish in the top eight at the upcoming Asian Championships in Tehran, Iran, to keep their Olympic qualification hopes alive.
The Men’s Volleyroos are in a tough pool at the Asian titles with games against the host nation Iran, the formidable Qatar and the 24th seeded team, Sri Lanka.
The seedlings are based on placings at the 2017 Asian Championships. Iran is seeded fifth and Australia eighth, in the 16-team competition.
The Australians fine-tuned for the Asian Titles with practice games against Qatar, China and India, with Volleyroos suffering losses to Qatar and China, both 3-0 before beating India 3-2.
The Volleyroos have been bolstered for the Asian Championships by the return of two of the biggest names in the sport in Australia, Tom Edgar and Nehemiah Mote.
The top eight teams will head into the final Olympic qualification round in January next year.
Australia’s opening game at the 2019 Asian Championships is against Qatar on Friday morning.
