4 Nations Team Announced

Future Stars of Beach Volleyball from Brazil, Japan, USA and Australia on show at Volleyfest

The world’s best Under-21 women’s teams from Australia, Brazil, Japan and the USA will take to the sands of Manly Beach for the inaugural Four Nations competition as part of Volleyfest this month, including US Champions Sarah Sponcil and Torrey Van Winden.

2012 Beijing Youth Olympian Brittany Kendall of South Australia and West Australian, Shelby Maher will lead the Australian charge, coach by Sydney 2000 Olympic Gold Medallist Kerri Pottharst.

Aussie young guns Kendall and Maher will use the event as a warm-up after against opponents, having recently qualified for the World Under 21 Championships to be held in Lucerne, Switzerland in May.

“We are delighted to host the women’s U21 Four Nations Event for the first time at Manly Beach,” Volleyball Australia Chief Executive Officer, Mathieu Meriaux said.

“These are exciting stars of the sport travelling from regions known famously for their passion for Beach Volleyball and we are honoured to be able to introduce them to Australia as part of Volleyfest.”

Team USA Under-21 stars Sponcil and Winden last month, won the under-21 women’s division of the USA Volleyball Beach High-Performance Team Trials in Chula Vista, California and will be the country's main draw entry at the FIVB U21 World Championship in Switzerland in May.

“This is my first time representing the USA in Beach Volleyball on Australian sand and I am very excited for the opportunity to compete,” said Sponcil.

“It will be wonderful for Torrey and I to get a taste of the international circuit and represent our country. We are looking forward to meeting the girls from Australia, Japan and Brazil.

“I have been told that Manly Beach is pretty spectacular and I can’t wait to experience the energy at Volleyfest,” Sponcil said,

The women’s teams will take centre stage at Manly Beach for The Four Nations Cup from Monday 21 and 22 March 2016.
