McHugh and Schumann book place in final 32 at World Championships

The Australian men’s beach volleyball team of Chris McHugh and Damien Schumann have posted their second win of the FIVB Beach World Championships, to book themselves a spot in the next round.

The Helloworld Travel Volleyroos beat Sierra Leone’s Patrick Lombi and Abu Bakarr Kamara, 21-8, 21-11 to follow up their impressive straight-sets win over Russia.

Their only loss was against the Italian Olympic silver medallists, Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo.

“It was a good win against Sierra Leone today, we knew we had to win no matter what and we won pretty convincingly so it puts us in a pretty good spot for the next round,” McHugh said.

“We’re happy to get to the round of 32 and it’s going to be a hard round no matter who it is so we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Schumann said it was important for the Australians to win strongly.

“It does heaps for our confidence,” he said.

“We really wanted to play strongly because if we just won, it would be a little bit shaky so we knew we had to come out strong. Second place was on the line.”

McHugh and Schumann join Australia’s top-ranked women’s team, Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy, in the round of 16. Bawden and Clancy take on Brazil’s Carolina Solberg Salgado and Maria Antonelli on Wednesday afternoon.
